Illinois is the most populous and diverse Midwestern state in North America. With its broad economic base and as an important transportation hub, Illinois is often viewed as a microcosm of the United States. This diversity is reflected in the many fabulous four and five-star luxury hotels of Illinois.

The rich coal mines in the central and southern areas and development of industry in the north attracted many other settlers from across America and from east and south of Europe. Many African Americans from the rural south also headed up this way in search of employment.

The climate across Illinois varies considerably but most of it experiences a hot humid continental climate in summer and cool to cold winters. Snowfalls are heavy particularly in the northern regions of Illinois.
